Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs as a result of high blood sugar, and can cause blindness if left untreated.  It affects the eye primarily by damaging the blood vessels of the retina.


Signs and Symptoms

  • Having Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes puts you at risk
  • No early signs
  • Loss of central vision when reading or driving
  • Loss of the ability to see color
  • Blurriness of vision
  • Family history of Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetes
 

Treatment and Prevention

  • Laser photocoagulation
  • Vitrectomy
