Ophthalmologists may refer patients directly to the Orthoptic Clinic for evaluation and non-surgical treatment of disorders of binocular vision, eye movements and eye alignment. Orthoptists work under the direction of Pediatric Ophthalmologists and are highly skilled allied health professionals who specialize in the treatment of convergence insufficiency, amblyopia ("lazy eye"), diplopia (double vision), and other disorders that disrupt binocular vision. Additionally, orthoptists are responsible for managing these conditions using prisms, occlusion, or orthoptic exercises.
